The Starbucks Union grows.
The executives at the Starbucks Corporation seem to be having a difficult time keeping their bottom line workers under control. Along with the two Boston locations filing for unionization recently and an Arizona location filing for unionization some time ago, a new contender is in the works for unionization. On December 12, 2021, a Starbucks location in Seattle, Washington filed for a union; a very nostalgic moment for Starbucks, as Seattle is their founding city. A message from the Seattle baristas to CEO and President Kevin Johnson read, "We do not see our desire to unionize as a reaction to specific policies, events, or changes, but rather a commitment to growing the company and the quality of our work. We see unionizing as a fundamental and necessary way to participate in Starbucks and its futures as partners. Starbucks' mission--to nurture and inspire the human spirit - one person, one cup, one neighborhood at a time--can only be achieved if partners have an organized voice to advocate for what those moments look like."
This unionization effort goes beyond a greedy corporate overhead, it stands as a voice for the voiceless, and democracy within every type of workplace.
